Kissing the pavement

On the way into work this morning I had my biannual wipeout on my bike. I was going downhill and took a curve too wide. I hit a patch of autumn humus and Physics Happened. I was able to continue to work and bike home.

Damage to self:minor. Momentarily stunned; gash on my right leg and ankle, road rash on posterior, and soreness and stiffness in places I didn’t know could get sore and stiff. I’m just glad I was wearing a tyvek (same stuff as envelopes) jacket and tights for the cool (47°F) weather. They were both ripped, which is kinda ironic for the tyvek jacket. I can never open those things…

Damage to bike: minimal. My back tire’s got a flat spot from the sidward skid – it’s down to the fabric, so the tire’s hosed; sheared my spare water bottle carrier off; right handlebar segment bent up 3″ (easily put back into place); rear derailleur needed adjusting.

  1. The downhill on the Lk Sammamish-Eastgate connector (with the hairpin climbs), literally three minutes after I saw you. 🙁 I figure I was going about 18-20.

  2. Ouch!! You might look into only doing this once a year. You ain’t getting any younger and I’m sure those bicycle clothes aren’t cheap nor easy to mend.

    Your friend, the ever irrelevant…

  3. Careful out there! Glad to hear you’re okay, tho. Next week, you go kick those leaves in the ass!

  4. Did you not get the memo? Gravity has been tested and found to be functioning. Further testing as been declared unnecessary. And, ala Mssrs. Prachett and Gaiman, should that not be Physics Happened(TM)?

Glad you hear you aren’t more bruised up. Sounds like it’s time for some “treat Jim nice” time.

(And if this double posted, please blame the stupid firewall at my office [g])

  6. glad to hear you are ok! You’ll have to write the creators of Tyvek and thank them. 🙂 (as them to improve the ripping thing, though)

  7. It was a bi-annual (once every two years). Last one was on RSVP 2003.

  8. Are your wipe-outs bi-annual or semi-annual? Bi-annual is not that bad of a record; semi-annual, and I begin to worry about you.
